What Is the Glycemic Index?

Why Does GI Matter for Weight Loss?
High GI foods cause rapid blood sugar spikes followed by crashes — triggering hunger within 1–2 hours of eating. Low GI foods produce a gradual, sustained energy release that keeps you fuller for longer. This matters enormously for creating a calorie deficit — you simply eat less when not constantly hungry.
Glycemic Load: The More Practical Metric
GI has a flaw: it measures pure food but not real-world portions. A watermelon has GI 76, but a typical slice has so little carbohydrate that its Glycemic Load (GL = GI × carbs in serving / 100) is only 4 — very low. Focus on GL for real-world guidance: carrot (GL 2), apple (GL 5), banana (GL 12), white rice serving (GL 26).
