Macro Calculation Guide: Not Just Calories — Protein, Carbs & Fat Balance

2,000 calories of pizza and 2,000 calories of chicken, rice, and vegetables have identical numbers — but completely different effects on your body composition, hunger, and energy. That's why macros matter.

Macro Calculation Guide

What Are Macros?

Macronutrients are the three main categories of nutrients that provide calories: protein (4 kcal/g), carbohydrates (4 kcal/g), and fat (9 kcal/g). Every food is a combination of these three — and tracking your macro ratio is often more impactful than tracking calories alone.

Macro Ratios by Goal

Step-by-Step Macro Calculation

Example: 75 kg person, weight loss goal, 1,700 kcal/day target

  • Protein: 2g × 75kg = 150g → 150 × 4 = 600 kcal (35%)
  • Fat: 30% of 1,700 = 510 kcal ÷ 9 = 57g fat
  • Carbs: Remaining = 1,700 − 600 − 510 = 590 kcal ÷ 4 = 147g carbs

Final targets: 150g protein / 147g carbs / 57g fat = 1,700 kcal
